Music Was My Refuge

Wow I can’t believe it is another year, a third year of the music soundtrack thing. I remember last year looking at what life had for me and thinking how far away ending college would be. Now I’m almost done! It is crazy and so this is a new year to reflect on. This is the year of the boyfriend and my first and only year of college. All I know for sure is that I have found some amazing new bands as well as some great old loves. So sit back and reflect with me on the music of life, love, and so much more. The music of 2007/2008.

August 2007 - Plain White T’s: So going into a new year of music I also had a new companion to share my fun way of finding music. In this month I started college and found a prince. Plain White T’s seemed appropriate because “Hey There Delilah” was our song. I listened to “Our Time Is Now” and I really felt like that finally it was my time to have someone. It was exciting and fun.

September 2007 - Ruth: With my 19th birthday came tickets to the dream come true Appetite for Construction Tour. With Switchfoot and Relient K it became more awesome though. It was this new band Ruth that made the concert more exciting to go to. The concert wasn’t until October, but I wanted to know the words when I went and began to fall in love with this band. There music was awesome and they had new ways of making the whole Christian rock music seem cool and yet still with the amazing message.

October 2007 - Farewell: Being on purevolume a lot during October I found one of the featured bands Farewell. They had this awesome rock sound and their song “Start it Up” totally rocked my socks off. I also loved “Stay Pretty” and some of the other songs. They had the whole Hellogoodbye meets Panic at the Disco sound and I liked the music because it was fun and peppy.

November 2007 – A Fine Frenzy/Colbie Calliat: I couldn’t choose just one ‘fem fatale’ for the month of November so I chose both of the girls I was listening to. In the beginning of November I was brought to the exciting “Bubbly” of Colbie Calliat. I had heard this song before, but became addicted to the way the song made me feel about my own bubbly feelings about a boy. I started to listen to some of her other songs including “Realize” and “The Little Things” which made me believe she was an amazing artist. Somewhere between that and waking up one more to A Fine Frenzy’s “Almost Lover” I saw the singer that I knew I could never be. Almost Lover was a beautiful song that made me understand that this year, as it was coming to an end was going to be different when it came to boys. That I hoped there would not be another almost lover.

December 2007 – Something Corporate: I have a friend that is in a band and he invited me and my boyfriend to a small intimate concert that the guys were having. This is where I began to really listen to the music of 90’s and beyond. I had heard of Something Corporate before, but never really took the time to listen to them. “I Woke Up In A Car” was a great song about wanting more than life is giving you. Hoping to see the world on its knees begging it to survive with you. I rang out the best year with Something Corporate which is kind of ironic. Looking in the past as you say hello to the future; Maybe not that ironic?

January 2008 – My Favorite Highway: Beginning a new year I looked back at the old one with a little sadness of letting it go. 2007 was the best year I have had in a while. “How to Call a Bluff” by My Favorite Highway and also “Calendar Days” started to speak to me. It made me wonder if I was going to write the same songs that I started the year before. Was my life going to be as pleasant? I loved the soft piano driven rock music that seemed to capture my January. The January I fell in love.

February 2008 - Paramore: Paramore has been a favorite band of mine for sometime, but I figure since paramore mean forbidden love Valentine’s month would be perfect. Listening to my old stuff and loving the new stuff Riot and All We Know Is Falling totally rocked the cold month of February that turned very warm. I reached a halfway point in a relationship and was amazed by the sincerity. How easy it was to be in love and actually say it out loud. I had a little fear though that maybe this was a forbidden love that was only going to last so long. I learned by the end of the month however that was not true.

March 2008 – Missy Higgins: “Where I Stood” is an amazing song talking about maybe the best thing you can do for someone is to let them go. I had issues this month and mistakes were made. I processed things and I decided not to give up just yet. I was upset and angry for many valid reasons. However I listened to this song saying ‘I don’t know who I am without you, all I know is that I should.’ I grew up and tried to understand that people make mistake and that they paid for them. I taught other people lessons in life and what is best in relationships. I learned a new idea of trust. Missy Higgins and her songs helped me with this new grown up lesson.

April 2008 – Katy Perry: Who can not love this vintage babe with a passion for pushing envelopes. “I Kissed A Girl” and “Ur So Gay” were the icing on the cake compared to how amazing this girl is as an artist. I began to listen to “Waking up in Vegas” and loved Katy Perry’s music. It is fun and daring. It is not the typical bubble gum pop, but has the beats and lyrics to make it stand out for a long time. There are certain songs I believe people never forget and I know this is going to be one. I will leave you with my favorite line from Ur So Gay though ‘you’re so sad; you should buy a happy meal, you’re so skinny; you should probably super size the deal.” It is so funny to listen to a girl that can handle Warped Tour and wear converse sneakers. She is like the updated version of Avril and so I think April was Katy’s month.

May 2008 – David Cook: With all the ranting and raving I don’t think you blog readers are surprised to see David Cook on the list. He is the new artist of this year and he is amazing. I have loved his singing since he auditioned and I always believed he would win. He is creative and makes unknown songs and well known songs into individual classics. “Eleanor Rigby”, Always Be My Baby, and Billie Jean were just some of the examples that made me beg the heavens to make this guy a superstar. He is a nice genuine guy that sings like an angel. This is the first year I have actually began to vote on American Idol, the first year since Kelly Clarkson that I have actually been excited to watch American Idol. When David Cook won it was a proud day and listening to him singing “Time of My Life” made me believe that everything and anything was possible. I’m excited for his future musical career.

June 2008 – Go:Audio/Starfeild: As summer came so did the idea that school was still going to continue. So I decided I would treat myself and allow two bands. The first band is a Mcfly type British band that brings techno and synthesizers to a new level. Their song “She Left Me” was hilarious and so good. There is just something about hearing someone sing ‘she got herself arrested, got ten years locked away’ explaining this instead of why his girlfriend left him. Hilarious! Starfield was one of my older loves that came back. I had first heard of them four or five years ago when I went to my first trip to Sonshine. I listened to “Filled With My Glory” at that time and when listening to the new radio station I found this year I heard their new stuff. “Everything is Beautiful” made me remember why I loved them.

July 2008 – The Cab: It is the last day of July and I listened to The Cab more than anything. Suggested by a friend this is another fueled by ramen group. There is something about Pete Wentz that makes me love music. He has a good ear for music because the songs I have heard are amazing “One of Those Nights” rocks so much and I don’t know if it is just the whole Brendon Urie (from Panic at the Disco) or Patrick Stump (from Fall Out Boy) thing , but I love them and will continue to listen to their music for awhile. It is most exciting that I am getting to the age where the bands are starting to be closer to my age and I’m excited for this boys from Las Vegas.

So there we go again. Three years I can’t believe I have been doing this. It makes the years go by fast and help them stay tolerable. I’m not exactly sure who will be in the music mix next year, but I have to say I’m excited. I found a new radio station this year fell in love. I had so much fun and hope to continue to do this for as long as I live. Eventually I think my music tastes will be broaden even more as I grow up and sure hope so. It is fun to look back at years in the form of bands and not stresses. I gained a boyfriend and a whole new music tastes, sounds, and bands that may end up on here next year. I have No Idea where I will be at this time, but I will try to find some time to update you in the world of music. I Love Music! Xoxo!
